How to Care for Gel Nails: Aftercare Tips for Long-Lasting Wear
Great nail prep is mostly your technician's job. But aftercare? That's all you. Here's exactly how to protect your investment and make your gel nails last as long as possible.
The First 24 Hours
Gel nails are cured by UV/LED light and should be fully polymerised when you leave the salon. However, in the first 24 hours you should avoid:
- Prolonged hot water exposure (long baths or hot tubs) — heat and water can temporarily soften the gel seal at the edges.
- Heavy-duty domestic cleaning without gloves.
- Any activity that puts lateral stress on the nail tips (especially if you have extensions).
Daily Habits That Extend Wear
Cuticle Oil — Daily
This is non-negotiable. Cuticle oil does two things: it keeps the skin around the nail hydrated (which reduces the mechanical stress caused by dry, tight skin pulling at the gel edge) and it keeps the nail bed flexible and less brittle. Apply it morning and night. Any brand with jojoba oil as the main ingredient will work well.
Glove Up
Water is the enemy. Specifically, hot soapy water left on the nail for extended periods works under the gel seal and accelerates lifting. Wearing rubber gloves when doing dishes, using cleaning products, or working with chemicals is the single most impactful daily habit for prolonging gel wear.
Use the Pad, Not the Tip
Try to use the pad of your fingertip rather than the nail tip when completing tasks — typing, opening packages, pressing buttons. Repeatedly landing on the tip of the nail creates a repetitive lever force that causes chips and breaks over time.
Never Peel
If your gel starts lifting at the edges, resist the urge to peel. Peeling gel rips layers of the natural nail plate with it, leaving thin, damaged nails underneath. Instead, clip any snagging edges carefully or book an early removal appointment.
When to Book Your Fill
The ideal window for a fill (also called an infill or rebalance) is around 2.5 to 3 weeks after your original appointment. By this point, visible regrowth at the base creates a gap that looks untidy and, more importantly, becomes a structural weakness — the gap acts as a lever, making the entire nail more likely to break or lift.
Don't wait for problems to appear. Staying on schedule with your fills will protect your natural nails and keep your set looking consistently pristine.
Gel Nail Aftercare Checklist
- ✓ Apply cuticle oil morning and night
- ✓ Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning
- ✓ Use fingertips, not nail tips, for tasks
- ✓ Never peel — always book a proper removal
- ✓ Fill at 2.5–3 weeks
- ✓ Full removal and re-set every 3–4 fills to assess natural nail health
Signs Your Natural Nails Need a Rest
Gel nails can be worn indefinitely if applied and removed correctly. However, watch for these signs that your natural nails may need a break: visible thinning or white patches on the nail plate; nails that feel painful or unusually sensitive; consistent peeling of the natural nail under the gel. If any of these appear, remove the gel, apply strengthening base coats, and wait a few weeks before reapplying.
