Removal is where most natural nail damage happens, and almost all of it is preventable. Here's how to take off gel nails without leaving your nails thin, peeling, or damaged.

Never Peel

Peeling gel off your nails pulls away layers of the natural nail plate. It's the single most damaging thing you can do. Even one peel can leave nails thin and weak for months. If you feel like peeling, read this guide first.

When to Remove at Home vs. See a Professional

Not all gel products can be safely removed at home. Here's a quick guide:

How to Remove Soft Gel at Home

This method works for gel polish and BIAB. You will need: pure acetone (100% acetone, not regular nail polish remover), cotton balls or pads, aluminium foil cut into small squares (or pre-attached soak-off wraps, which skip the cutting), a coarse nail file (180 grit), cuticle oil, and a wooden or rubber cuticle pusher.

Step-by-Step

  1. Break the seal. Use a 180-grit file to lightly buff the top layer of the gel, removing the shine and breaking the protective top coat seal. Don't file hard or thin the gel significantly, just dull the surface.
  2. Soak cotton in acetone. Cut cotton pads into finger-sized pieces and saturate them with 100% acetone.
  3. Wrap each finger. Place the acetone-soaked cotton directly on the nail (not the skin) and wrap tightly with a square of foil. Repeat for all 10 fingers.
  4. Wait 15-20 minutes. For gel polish, 15 minutes is usually enough. BIAB may need 20-25 minutes.
  5. Gently push off the gel. Remove one wrap at a time. Use a wooden or rubber cuticle pusher to gently slide the softened gel off the nail. It should come off in soft sheets with minimal pressure. If it doesn't come off easily, re-wrap for another 5 minutes. Do not force it.
  6. Gently buff and nourish. Once all gel is removed, gently buff with a fine buffer (not aggressively), wash hands, and immediately apply cuticle oil and hand cream. Acetone is drying and your skin and nails will need moisture.

Removing Gel-X Extensions

Before soaking, use nail clippers to carefully clip the tip down to reduce the length of the extension, which speeds up absorption significantly. Then follow the same foil wrap method above, soaking for 20-25 minutes. The tip should slide off the natural nail cleanly once saturated. If it doesn't, keep soaking.

After Removal Care

  • Apply cuticle oil immediately and daily for the next week
  • Use a strengthening base coat if going bare for a period
  • Avoid harsh chemicals on bare nails
  • Wait at least 1 week before a new set if nails feel thin

If your natural nails look significantly thinner after removal, or if you see white patches indicating nail plate separation, book an appointment with a reputable nail tech and tell them what you're seeing. A professional can assess the damage and recommend the best path to recovery.

Removing gel nails: FAQ

Can I remove gel nails at home?

It depends on the product. Soft gel polish removes safely at home with an acetone soak. BIAB and Gel-X can be done at home carefully but take longer. Hard gel and acrylic need a professional, because both require an e-file — they are not a DIY job.

How long does it take to soak off gel?

Budget 15–20 minutes. Gel polish is usually off in about 15 minutes, BIAB needs 20–25, and Gel-X needs 20–25 after you clip the tip down to shorten the extension and speed up absorption.

What do I need to remove gel at home?

Pure 100% acetone — not regular nail polish remover — plus cotton pads, aluminium foil cut into squares, a coarse 180-grit file, cuticle oil, and a wooden or rubber cuticle pusher. Place the soaked cotton on the nail rather than the skin, and wrap each finger tightly.

Is it bad to peel gel nails off?

It is the single most damaging thing you can do to your nails. Peeling pulls layers of the natural nail plate away with the gel, and even one incident can leave nails thin, weak, and visibly white-patched for months.

What if the gel will not come off?

Re-wrap the finger and soak for another 5 minutes. Softened gel should slide off in soft sheets with minimal pressure from a wooden or rubber pusher. If it resists, it needs more time — never force or lever it off.
