The Complete Nail Shapes Guide: Which Shape Is Right for You?

March 20266 min read

Your nail shape dramatically changes how your hands look — and how long your nails last. Here's everything you need to decide which shape suits you best.

The shape of your nail affects durability, how flattering the nail looks on your hand, and how much maintenance is required. The right shape depends on your natural nail bed width, the length you want to wear, your lifestyle, and your aesthetic preference.

The Most Popular Nail Shapes

Square

Best for: Wider nail beds, practical lifestyles

Flat across the top with straight sides and sharp corners. Clean, classic, and one of the most durable shapes since there are no tapered sides to snag or break.

Maintenance: LowLength needed: Short to medium

Rounded / Oval

Best for: Narrow nail beds, beginners, low-maintenance

Straight sides with a softly rounded tip following the natural shape of the fingertip. Flattering on almost all hand types and less prone to breakage than pointed shapes.

Maintenance: LowLength needed: Short to medium

Squoval

Best for: Those who want square but more forgiving

A hybrid: square top with slightly rounded corners. Combines the durability of square with the softness of oval. The most popular everyday shape.

Maintenance: LowLength needed: Short to medium

Almond

Best for: Elongating short fingers, elegant aesthetics

Tapered sides that meet at a rounded, soft peak — mimicking the shape of an almond. Requires medium-to-long length to look correct. A perennial favourite for nail art.

Maintenance: MediumLength needed: Medium to long

Coffin / Ballerina

Best for: Drama, extensions, long nails

Long, tapered sides that end in a flat, squared-off tip — resembling a coffin or ballet slipper. Almost always requires extensions. One of the most requested shapes for gel sets.

Maintenance: Medium–HighLength needed: Long (extensions recommended)

Stiletto

Best for: Maximum drama, editorial looks

Extremely pointed tip. Almost always requires extensions or acrylics to achieve safely. Striking but high-maintenance — the tip is fragile and prone to breaking.

Maintenance: HighLength needed: Extensions required

Flare / Duck

Best for: Statement nails, a specific aesthetic

Widens toward the tip, creating a flared effect. A niche shape with a retro flair, popular in certain nail art communities. Almost always done with extensions.

Maintenance: HighLength needed: Extensions required

Which Shape Suits Your Hand Shape?

  • Wide nail beds: Almond and oval shapes elongate the appearance of wider fingers.
  • Narrow nail beds: Square or squoval work beautifully on slender fingers.
  • Short fingers: Almond and oval create an elegant illusion of length. Avoid very wide square shapes.
  • Long fingers: You can wear almost any shape. Square and coffin are especially striking on long fingers.

New to Nail Extensions?

If you're getting your first set of extensions, we recommend starting with almond or squoval. They're forgiving, flattering on most hands, and give you a chance to adjust to wearing longer nails before committing to a dramatic stiletto or coffin shape.

Shape & Product Compatibility

Not every nail product works equally well for every shape. BIAB is best suited for squoval, oval, or soft square shapes where the natural nail does the work. Gel-X extensions can achieve any shape but are especially popular for coffin and almond due to the wide variety of pre-shaped tips available. Acrylics are the most versatile for extreme sculpted shapes like stiletto or flare.
